Hi, I'm Jean de Dieu Utabarutse!
Chemistry at University of Rwanda, College of Science and Technology
I am a Rwandan national and a recent graduate of the University of Rwanda, College of Science and Technology, where I obtained a Master of Science in Chemistry (Environmental Chemistry) and a Bachelor of Science with Honours in Chemistry (Bio-organic Chemistry). Before my university studies, I completed an Advanced Level secondary education in Physics, Chemistry, and Biology (PCB), which provided me with a strong scientific foundation and nurtured my curiosity for understanding natural and engineered systems. From an early stage of my academic journey, I developed a strong interest in applying scientific knowledge to solve real-world problems, particularly those related to environmental protection, sustainable industrial development, and public well-being. My undergraduate studies in Chemistry with a specialization in Bioorganic Chemistry equipped me with a solid foundation in organic synthesis, reaction mechanisms, stereochemistry, biomolecules, and analytical chemistry. I gained extensive laboratory experience, which strengthened my experimental skills, attention to detail, and ability to analyze and interpret scientific data. These experiences helped me develop a strong appreciation for the role of chemistry in understanding biological systems and designing functional compounds for industrial and medical applications. Building upon this foundation, my Master’s degree in Environmental Chemistry allowed me to explore the chemical processes that govern environmental systems, including water and soil chemistry, pollution dynamics, environmental monitoring, and remediation strategies. During my postgraduate studies, I became increasingly interested in how chemical principles can be translated into engineering solutions for environmental protection and sustainable development. I was particularly drawn to the application of analytical chemistry andprocess-oriented thinking to address challenges such as water quality degradation, waste management, and pollution control.
