New Product Introduction (NPI) Swimlane Realignment

Project Leader

I led the heads of departments of the eight departments (Planning, Production Control Unit, Technical, Production, Quality, Merchandising, Raw Materials, and Lab and Inspection) that the successful implementation and running of the 8 stages of the NPI process rely on through the realignment of the Swimlane lead times to ensure that each stage is completed on time and the customer deliveries are made on time. After the meeting where we discussed the roles that each department plays in the NPI process and the challenges they face, I then drew an updated Swimlane diagram using the Visio software whereby I clearly highlighted the roles of each member in each department and the updated lead times that were agreed upon during the meetings. This ensured that each person involved in the NPI process actualization was well informed of their roles to avoid confusion and proper confusion.

Design of a Hydrochloric Acid (HCl) Regeneration Plant

Project Leader

During my attachment at Maisha Mabati Mills in Ruiru, I observed that the company uses up large amounts of money to purchase fresh hydrochloric acid to be used for pickling of the hot rolled coils (HRCs).
Hence this project was conceived with the objective of cutting down that cost by regenerating the spent pickle liquor from 5% concentration to 18% (same as that of the fresh HCl). My group members and I decided on using the spray roaster technology and we designed the entire regeneration plant from mass and energy balance to designing the equipment using AutoCAD, site location and layout, and environmental impact assessment.

Waste Beneficiation of Galvanic Sludge

Project Leader and Inventor of the Project Idea

The project entailed using galvanic sludge from a steel manufacturing company in Ruiru, Kenya, where I was attached for my second attachment. The motivation for pursuing the project was finding a use for the sludge which the company had no use for so they disposed of it in Dandora landfill in Nairobi where it pollutes the environment since the sludge contains iron which is a heavy metal. Another motivation for the project was to come up with a cheaper housing option than the concrete bricks in the market because construction cost in Kenya is high and most Kenyans cannot afford to build their own homes since they are already earning less than a dollar a day. We mixed the galvanic sludge with clay in different ratios then after air drying and oven drying we tested for the compressive and flexural strengths of the bricks to find which ratio gave us the most superior mechanical properties.
