Cybersecurity Career Awareness and Threat Landscape Presentations
Session 1: See yourself in a cybersecurity journey (30 min) Session 2: Global Threat Landscape Update (30 min) Session 3: Create your Future: Cybersecurity Education and Career Opportunities (30 min) See yourself in a cybersecurity journey (30 min) Lydia Chan, International Programs, San Jose State University (30 min)
SJSU and TrendMicro, in partnership with CommUniverCity, jointly educated 4th-8th grade students in several after school programs focusing on cybersecurity awareness and careers. An innovative teaching approach was adopted to inspire the cybersecurity pathway. The classes were taught by a college student as the main teacher. During the class, the college student was assisted by an industry expert and a middle school student as a consultant and as an example respectively. We cultivate the cyber security career pathway by showing how the student can practice cybersecurity themes now, imaging what they can teach as a college student, and visualizing an expert in action during the online session. The students learned cybersecurity concepts through modeling in Minecraft and an interactive kahoot game.
The train-the-trainer approach also provided invaluable experience to the college students. Not only did they learn cybersecurity concepts from industry practitioners, but they also serve the local communities.
CommUniverCity is a unique partnership between underserved communities in Central San José, San José State University and the City of San José. The projects support a fluid exchange of knowledge and resources between our SJSU service-learning students and the neighboring residents. Campus leaders recognize the power of high impact pedagogies such as service-learning to instill in students an ethic of civic engagement in a democratic society. Downtown residents, who are traditionally underserved, take part in these programs that serve to increase literacy skills and instill a “college-going” culture. The presenter will highlight this partnership among academic, government and industry entities.
