With the global goal to reach net zero emission of greenhouse gases by the year 2050. Hydrogen has become a potential alternative to sustainable energy. Ammonia has been identified as an alternative solution as a hydrogen carrier as it does not emit GHG during hydrogen generation and it’s a well-established commodity.
Ruthenium is a good active component but is scarce and expensive, it is therefore
important that more experimental studies are conducted to find an alternative
active component. Ruthenium has been abundantly explored and has given a
framework on reaction mechanism studies but a lack of comparative kinetics studies using different catalyst preparation methods and kinetic study over a Co/SiO2 catalyst under the same reaction conditions (temperature, pressure and
feed composition).
The aim of the project is to investigate the kinetics of ammonia decomposition over a Co/SiO2 catalyst that are prepared with three different methods (Sol-gel, incipient wetness impregnation and co-precipitation) under normal conditions.
Conducted a comprehensive study analysing the effectiveness of 3 different catalyst methods, including sol-gel, co-precipitatio

With South Africa’s rapidly growing industrial industry, there will be an increase in production of electricity and fuels as they are becoming a need. This will lead to an increase of sulphur dioxide emissions into the environment from coal fired utility plants. Wet FGD process have become expensive as well as not favourable due to restricted water sources in the country. Therefore, semi-dry FGD process is becoming a viable option but not a lot of research has been done for industrial upscale therefore it is important that more experimental studies are conducted to better understand the reaction kinetics and optimum operation conditions. This is favourable to decrease environmental impact and economical strain.
