What can a satellite tell a smallholder farmer? Quite a lot, it turns out. Dr. Catherine Nakalembe builds satellite and AI-based tools that address local farming challenges across Africa, developing early warning systems for droughts and floods and crop monitoring programmes that governments use to make decisions. An assistant professor at the University of Maryland and Africa Director of NASA Harvest, she founded the Xylem Institute to turn Earth observation data into food-security decisions. In this session, she introduces GeoAI as a discipline, where geospatial science, remote sensing and machine learning meet - and explains what it actually looks like as a job.
