Course Overview
Prepare for a career in sustainability with the Carbon + ESG Analyst course, a collaboration between Localized and the University of Cambridge. This free, 8-week online program is designed for recent female graduates based in Nairobi, Cairo, or Johannesburg who are eager to build green skills and pursue job opportunities in the growing field of environmental, social, and governance (ESG) frameworks. Through expert instruction from Cambridge faculty and industry connections via Localized, you'll learn cutting-edge carbon accounting practices, ESG ratings, risk assessments, and reporting standards essential for businesses adapting to new regulations. By the end of the course, you’ll be equipped with the practical skills needed to drive sustainable change within organizations and meet the rising demand for green professionals.
Eligibility:
To qualify, you must be a female recent graduate based in Nairobi, Cairo or Johannesburg.
You must have a reliable internet connection and be available to learn online for 8 weeks between November-January (unpaid but the course is free). There will be a break between December 16-January 6.
You must be interested in finding a job after completing the course. We'll help you look for a job and reach out to employers with you.
You will need a level of spoken and written English sufficient to allow you to participate and succeed in the course -- we recommend IELTS 6.5 or equivalent.

Localized is a social enterprise that connects young people with industry experts and employers. Since over 50,000 businesses will be impacted by new ESG and carbon accounting regulations in the next 3 years, a growing number of employers will be looking to hire people with green skills. Localized partnered with one of the best universities in the world, The University of Cambridge, to develop an online Carbon + ESG Analyst course & badge to meet growing industry demand.
Our aim is to train 110 fresh graduates in new greenhouse gas emissions and ESG frameworks that will impact these 50,000 businesses. The course draws on the expertise of Cambridge’s esteemed faculty and Localized’s extensive industry contacts. This is a practical course which develops the real-world skills you will need to pursue a career as a sustainability specialist.
Through this certification, you will learn the latest carbon accounting and ESG-related ratings, risk assessment and reporting frameworks to meet the growing demand for green skills.
By the end of the course, you'll be able to:
- Describe interconnected sustainability challenges and opportunities
- Analyse the role of businesses in driving change
- Identify the appropriate frameworks and standards for a given context to drive change
- Analyse the mechanisms for accountability within a business
- Evaluate businesses' application of sustainability frameworks and standards
- Create an action plan for a business to drive positive sustainable outcomes
Course Topics:
Reporting: Learn the carbon and ESG reporting requirements for the following--or future variants of them such as:
- The Taskforce for Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD)
- The Sustainability Accounting Standards Board (SASB)
- Carbon Disclosure Program (CDP), SFRD, EET, IFRS
- ISO 14064
- Paris-Aligned Target & Reduction Plan (SBTi)
- Learn to create a concordance table
- Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) – including the Double Materiality Assessment (DMA) process, which impacts companies that are based in Europe of a certain size and companies that do business in Europe
Carbon Accounting: Prepare reports that can stand up to 3rd party audits (carbon/GHG Protocol footprint structure, ESG non-financial disclosures annual report)
- Learn the requirements for producing a Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Management Plan and take GHG Inventory
- Gain familiarity with local or national agencies such as the EPA
- Produce an ESG risk assessment matrix
- Evaluate the ESG and carbon metrics of any ESG project
